The conference  agenda was formulated to reach the following objectives (the agenda also contains links to the presentations and papers given at the conference, as well as the fund profiles and speaker biographies):

  • Facilitate a dialogue among African funds in an effort to share experiences and learn about programs, challenges and constraints faced by Funds throughout the continent. Read more about the various funds currently operating in Africa!

  • Learn more about issues in conservation finance and their relevance to each Fund's specific programs and priorities.

  • Identify strategies and actions to meet long-term financing needs in the region.

  • Explore how best to strengthen existing funds and increase the number of environmental funds operating in Africa.

RhinoThe conference took place April 3 - 6, 2002, at the Lake
Manyara Serena Safari Lodge in Tanzania and was  open to both established and emerging environmental funds in Africa. Fund representatives from 16 African countries and 26 Environmental Funds attended the event. Participation of African Funds was financed through grant support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and other donors. The conference was organized the Wildlife Conservation Society's Conservation Finance Program (WCS-CFP) with the support of the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF).
