A Conference for African Environmental Funds
"Sustainable Finance for Conservation in Africa"
Arusha, Tanzania, April 3-6, 2002
Sponsored by the Interagency Planning Group for
Environmental Funds,
The Wildlife Conservation Society's Conservation Finance Program, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Tanzanian Land Conservation Trust/African Wildlife Foundation - Tanzania

We would like to thank the following organizations for their financial and organizational support of the First Conference for African Environmental Funds:

  • The Interagency Planning Group on Environmental Funds (IPG) - an international group of donors, NGOs and policymakers dedicated to supporting, in a variety of ways, environmental funds in Africa, Asia and Latin America, as effective, long-term conservation financing mechanisms and sustainable institutions for biodiversity protection and compatible development. Members of the IPG include: World Bank, UNDP, USAID, GEF, Wildlife Conservation Society, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, Synergos Institute, African Wildlife Foundation, IRG, MacArthur Foundation, the European Union, as well as other organizations and independent conservation finance professionals.

  • Wildlife Conservation Society's (WCS) Conservation Finance Program (CFP)- seeks to contribute to the long-term financial viability of the biodiversity conservation projects and activities of WCS and its partners throughout the World, by providing information, technical assistance and direct support to initiatives aimed at creating funding opportunities, generating revenue and stabilizing income flows. WCS-CFP was the main organizer of the conference, with help from AWF in Tanzania.

  • The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation - an independent grantmaking institution dedicated to helping groups and individuals foster lasting improvement in the human condition.

  • Tanzanian Land Conservation Trust/African Wildlife Foundation - Tanzania. The Tanzanian Land Conservation Trust (TLCT) was created to acquire threatened critical conservation areas and then manage them for sustainable conservation and increased benefits to local communities.

  • The Nature Conservancy's mission is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. TNC provided support in the organization and administration of the conference.
