On February 21st, the CFA members were communicated that the network was invited by IUCN to support the conservation finance agenda in IUCN’s World Parks Congress 2014.
Now we have additional good news to share with you all! The CFA Working Group on Protected Areas Finance, under the leadership of Andrew Bovarnick of UNDP, has been invited to become a Specialist Group of IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas.
The CFA Working Group on Protected Areas Finance was established in the context of the last IUCN World Parks Congress, held in Durban, South Africa in 2003 and now counts on a global membership of practitioners of over 150. This is the largest network of expertise in the area of protected area financing. In recognition of this expertise the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) has invited the Working Group to serve as the WCPA’s Specialist Group on Protected Area Financing. Ernesto Enkerlin is the Chair of WCPA. You can read more about the work of this 1,700 person strong commission here.
This will bring added purpose and value to the CFA WG. We hope you as members also are supportive and that this evolution will inspire the Working Group to re-invigorate and become more active in sharing lessons and successes from all of your activities in the arena of protected area financing.
Andrew Bovarnick will continue to head this working group and will be in touch in due course with new activities for the network, particularly to gear up and prepare for providing inputs into the IUCN World Parks Congress later in November 2014 where we will organize an event to celebrate the launch of the new IUCN WCPA Specialist Group on Protected Areas Finance.
